Description: The Kerry Blue Terrier is a muscular, medium-sized dog. They have a large and long head that is in proportion to the rest of the body. Their teeth meet in a scissor or level bite, their muzzle is long but in good proportion to the head. We see a wide nose and a black nose. This dog has small eyes that are dark. With small V-shaped ears that are on the top of the head, slightly above the line of the skull and carried forward.

The Kerry Blue Terrier breed has a long neck that widens towards the shoulders. The high-set tail is straight and is docked in countries that allow it. The height of the dogs is 18½ to 20 inches, and the female dogs are 17½ to 19 inches. Both male dogs and female dogs weigh between 34 and 40 pounds. Coat colors come in shades of brown, black to very dark blue. With the color of the adults that goes from slate blue to light grey.

History: The Kerry Blue Terrier comes from Ireland, from County Kelly and dates back to around 1700. This breed is a National Terrier of Ireland. The Kerry Blue Terrier is believed to have developed from ancient Black, Spanish, or Russian Terriers with the possibility of Irish Wolfhounds.

There is also a belief that the Portuguese Water Dog has contributed to the Kerry blue Terrier’s unique wavy, silky coat. This dog has been used as an all around working dog, retriever, sheep herder, guard, hunting, police work, and most commonly, companion. In the United States, the Blue Terrier club was started in 1922 and was recognized by the AKC in 1924.
