Start by taking an inventory of the newest memorabilia and knickknacks you love that could be used as home décor in the kitchen. The souvenirs I used in my shabby chic kitchen were an old wooden recipe box, antique measuring spoons, old tin cookie cutters, a miniature griddle, an antique compact, a rose patterned ceramic plate with lid and serving spoon, a vintage tea set, and a couple of small photos in antique frames.
Decide where you will display your items. I used a tall wrought iron corner shelf with four shelves to display the above items. On each shelf I placed a small lace doily that hung from the edge of the shelf. What I liked most about this collection was that it was tucked away in a corner and out of the flow of traffic, and at the same time it was very attractive. It was a wonderful way to display memories instead of having them packed in a box.
Shabby chic home decor such as antique bowls, trays, and vases can be displayed on countertops and then brought to life using them. Your family and guests will enjoy the uniqueness of your past as well as your present beauty. For most family vacation dinners, I bring the family heirloom to serve plates and trays. What a great way to remember those good times!
Kitchen curtains are a great way to add that shabby chic style with a unique touch. Instead of the traditional coffee curtains, wear a valance scarf made from beautiful shabby chic cotton. Instead of placing the valance scarf on a rod, use a parchment-type hook, place the scarf as usual over the hooks, and then pass the scarf through each hook from the back to create a “puffy circular” look at every corner of the window. This is very attractive and unique, plus it keeps the scarf in place. The sides of the scarf hang halfway across the window for added interest.
A wrought iron chandelier with an aged finish is a great addition to the shabby chic home decor above the dining room table in the kitchen. Add style to shabby chic decor without being too formal.
