In Rapid City, South Dakota, located at the base of Mt. Rushmore Road, sits a quaint little family run motel. The Lazy U, built in the 1950s, has a charm that draws visitors year after year. Recently celebrating its 70th birthday, the restored hotel is as fresh as it was on opening day.

Verlyn and Cindy Bourne have owned and maintained the motel for the past fifteen years. One of the last Mom & Pop’s in the Black Hills, The Lazy U is a real gem. They have given the little motel a charm that is rare in today’s bustling world. Parked out front, you’re greeted by a 1954 Chevy pickup truck, complete with The Lazy U logo. Cindy’s grandfather owned the new truck, and she learned to drive it. You can find Cindy by taking her to the farmer’s market or grocery store. Restored from an old farm truck to The Lazy U Mascot, the Bournes are always happy to use it for photo backdrops.

Transported back in time upon entering the lobby. You will find reasonable prices and friendly faces. A personal greeting from the family awaits: Cindy, Verlyn or Cindy’s cousin Jackie. Travelers can enjoy a cool drink and lively conversation and a wealth of maps and brochures. After check-in, receive a real key with a shiny turquoise retro key fob. The Bournes and their family members are happy to make your stay as pleasant as possible.

You will feel at home and part of the family. Enjoy gleaming rooms, free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and parking in front of your room. Verlyn, the Routemaster, or one of his deputies will be happy to plan your day trips. Walk, bike or visit the beautiful sites and attractions of The Black Hills. Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse are just the beginning of your Black Hills adventure. After a long day of adventures, come home to a fresh, clean room.

Enjoy the most comfortable night’s sleep one can hope for away from home. The beds, recently and often replaced with new sets of pillows, will leave you wanting to sleep. Spotlessly clean sheets and fluffy towels will help you feel pampered. Hairdryers are available at the reception, but you will need to bring your own shampoo. The family forgoes expensive toiletries for cheap accommodation.

This little gem from the past will have you planning your next visit before you check out. You will return home well rested and full of fond memories. When you leave, you’ll understand why people return to the charming Lazy U Motel year after year.
